Fran made her living for 15 years as a full-time maker, selling pots at specialist events and galleries around the country.

Her own work is largely functional wheel-thrown domestic stoneware, as well as some more contemplative pieces of low-fired burnished and smoked pottery.

Fran Tristram's burnished & smoked range: large bottle

Teaching has always been an important component of Fran’s activity and during 2008 Rod and Fran began the rebuilding and refitting work necessary to change their main focus to providing their range of art classes together as Seymour Road Studios from April 2009.

Students will find a relaxed and friendly environment in all our art classes where we take a maximum number of 8 students at any one time.  Our small class sizes make it possible to support the development and progress of each student at their own pace so we can welcome complete beginners as well as more advanced students.

Students in Fran’s regular pottery classes will learn to master all the hand-building techniques making pots by pinching, coiling and slab-building.

Decoration techniques using texture, slips (liquid clay mixed with stains and colouring oxides), oxides, glazes are all introduced.  Please note that the dozen or so pretty earthenware (1000-1080C) glazes currently available in the studio may be used for foodware, but due to the low firing temperature they remain a little porous, so should not be placed directly on fine polished furniture if used to contain liquids.

Please note that we do not teach throwing on the wheel in group classes.   Throwing is such an intense activity that it is difficult to give meaningful tuition as part of a group session, so we offer instead  tailor made private one-to-one sessions which can be individually booked at a time to suit you.

NB  Please be sure to collect your pots at the appropriate time.  We regret that pots left in the workshop for more than 3 months will be disposed of as we do not have space for unlimited storage.

Please enjoy looking through the colourful gallery (below) of some example images of students’ work produced in our classes.
Do please also like our Seymour Road Studios facebook page and enjoy more up-to-date photos of students’ work there.
